Wray Community District Hospital received a $500 Seed Grant in September 2005 that was used towards the purchase of a Breast Palpation Simulator. The simulator is part of the hospital’s larger Breast Cancer awareness program. Free exams will be given annually at the Fall Health Fair. At the 2005 Health Fair in November, Wray Community District Hospital performed 32 free exams. Included in the 32 were 3 Spanish-speaking women who were able to translate through an available interpreter, 9 women who did not have mammography coverage, and 8 women who did not have health insurance. Participants in the program were given instructions, shown a video, given a breast examination by the a staff Physician Assistant, and able to practice self-exams on the simulator. While free mammograms are too costly for the hospital, these exams encourage women to give themselves monthly self-examinations and to actively participate in breast cancer awareness and education. |
